Decisive moment
In street photography, there is rarely just one ‘decisive moment’. Rather, every scene offers numerous fascinating moments that you can capture.
A decisive moment can be a fleeting hand movement, an unexpected smile, an intense feeling or an expression that catches your attention in a special way.
If you miss such a moment, there's no need to worry. Don't let it distract you for too long, because there will be more decisive moments waiting for you.
Often, you won't recognise the best ‘decisive moment’ until you look at your photos later – perhaps when browsing through the thumbnails of the entire series you've taken.
That's why I recommend taking several shots when you see an exciting scene. Later, at home, you can take your time choosing your favourites.
Are you unsure which photo is the strongest? Use the ‘thumbnail test’. Print out small preview images of your photos and pick the one that immediately catches your eye – that's often your winner.

It's worth viewing your street photos as small thumbnails, as this makes the composition much clearer. It also allows you to browse through your shots more quickly, which is particularly useful if you've taken hundreds of photos in a single day.
